A Babb Coat of Arms!

I’ve stumbled upon a historic reference to a Babb Coat of Arms in St Nicholas Church in Arundel, Sussex, England. While this wouldn’t be the William Babb of Arundel that I discussed previously, it is likely his son or grandson. In this case, Gulielmi (Latin for William) worked in the service of the church and the King. It is important to note that many of the markers have been moved in the 1800s when the churchyard was paved. So, this may not be the exact location of William’s burial. But if it is, he is buried inside the church in the North Transept, which is essentially the arm part of the cross that most churches of that age were built with.

The biggest news is that we have a copy of the Coat of Arms on the plaque that still exists in this modern day. At least it did in 1834 when the book was written. Two Babb Family Association members have tried to locate the plaque and were unsuccessful. A message was sent to the church, but no response has been received as of the time of this post.

So, I have tried my best to recreate it while we continue to pursue this lead. In the meantime, this set of Arms will suffice. Note that a Babb has NEVER had a legitimate Coat of Arms as recognized by the Royal College of Arms. So, this is yet another Babb that is using their Arms inappropriately. Sounds like he’s definitely one of us!

Translation:
Near this is buried the body of William Babb, are, a lay vicar in the office of the king’s memorial. Who, in the year of the age of sixty-three, on the sixth day of December 1698, gave up his soul to God.

This is our only record thus far of William’s existence and it brings to us another Coat of Arms that was heretofore unknown to us.
