Julia Older to speak at 2011 Reunion

As you know, I had lunch with Julia Older while in Portsmouth. It was the highlight of my trip! She is the author of a series of novels about the Isles of Shoals. The second installment of which features Phillip Babb & Family prominently and is named “This Desired Place.” The big news, is that she has agreed to speak at our reunion next year. We haven’t worked out the logistics just yet, but I’m shooting for the day we go to the Isles of Shoals. Give me a few weeks and I’ll sort something out. So about our lunch: A little pressed for time, we met at the Sheraton next to where the Thomas Leighton carries passengers to/fro the islands. I think she got a kick out of meeting an actual descendant of Phillip and I certainly got one out of meeting the person who brought a great piece of immortality to him. She was first inspired to create the 3 part series upon visiting the island back in the days when it was an artist colony. She was struck by the distinct periods in their history, first with the fisheries, later as a luxury retreat in the Victorian Era and in the 20th century as the artist colony before becoming the university’s marine laboratory. The first book in the series features Celia Thaxter, but the time and characters of the 3rd book are tightly held until she is further along in the book. She is researching it right now. This Desired Place and The Island Queen are available at http://appledorebooks.com/booklist.htm and also on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/This-Desired-Place-Isles-Shoals/dp/0974148822/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1271714733&sr=8-4. Happy Reading!
