Cadwallader Smith, Miller of St Andrews Parish, Hertfordshire – Estate Records (6 Mar 1707)

Cover Image: St Andrews Parish Church, Hertford, Hertfordshire.

This is the single largest estate I’ve seen on record in Hertfordshire. Cadwallider (Cadwallader) was a very wealthy man, and the cash portion of his bequests amount to £584. Our John Babb was put in charge as an co-executor of this massive estate. Who was John, you may ask? The record isn’t perfectly clear on this topic, but he appears to be the same person as John Babbs who was granted a license as a Higgler in 1683. By 1706 he is listed in this estate record as a mealmaker. Here’s a quick breakdown of what a mealmaker might have done in 1707 Hertfordshire:

  • 🌾 Grinding Grain: Operated or worked at a mill to produce meal from cereal grains.
  • 🛒 Selling Meal: May have sold the ground product directly to bakers, brewers, or households.
  • 🧺 Supplying Households: In some contexts, especially in Scotland, the term could also refer to a meal dealer or provisioner.

Given that Cadwallader Smith is self-described as a miller in this estate, “mealmaker” would be a natural occupational synonym—especially if used in reference to someone in his family or trade circle. If it appears in a will or inventory, it might also hint at someone involved in the commercial side of milling rather than just the mechanical process. If you are peddling live animals, it is an easy add-on sale to have meal on hand as an add-on sale.

This evidence is in no way conclusive, but it is a theory that at-least explains how he trusted John to deliver as an Executor. They likely would have been in business for years prior to Cadwallader’s death. John is not explicitly called out as a kinsman, but in the context of the way it was written can be construed that way. For that reason, I have placed all of the people mentioned in Cadwallader’s Will into the same tree under the name Hertfordshire Pedigree (Hertford 1683) so that they can be held together as research continues.

What sort of living would a Miller make in 1705 Hertfordshire?

miller in early 18th-century England, especially in a rural county like Hertfordshire, would typically be considered a respectable tradesman. Here’s a breakdown of what that might have looked like:

📌 Economic Status

  • Middle class: Millers often owned or leased mills, which were essential to local agriculture. They processed grain for farmers and were paid in cash or a portion of the grain (a system called “multure”).
  • Income: While exact figures vary, a successful miller could earn £20–£50 per year, possibly more if they owned the mill and land.
  • Wealth accumulation: Cadwallader’s ability to bequeath over £500 and property suggests he was affluent by local standards.

🏡 Assets

  • He owned or leased:
    • water mill, Barns and arable land, messuage (dwelling house with land)
  • These holdings indicate he was more than a laborer—likely a yeoman or small landowner.

📚 Social Role

  • Millers were often central figures in rural communities, both economically and socially.
  • However, they were sometimes viewed with suspicion due to their control over grain processing and pricing.

What would £584 buy in 1705?
