Ancestry.com Exciting New Feature – Epilogue

So, I got a nice night’s sleep and once I had some breakfast and caffeine, I took to my computer to see the results. The process was still running! <ugh>

It had been about 12 more hours since I gave up last night. The spinning wheel of death was still moving, which would lead me to believe that it was still working on it. Sadly, that was not the case.

I decided to snoop around the screen to see if I could find any clues. When I hovered over the strange symbol in the top right corner, I found this message that is included below. It says the file “was not uploaded. The maximum file size is 15MB.

So, it never was doing anything and the only error it threw wasn’t obvious enough. The wheel was still spinning (it’s what they do). Disgusted, I tried a secondary document that is typewritten. These are my results:

OK, so no double columns either. Moving right along, I pull up a letter from my mother’s side of the tree to use as a proof of concept. This is just the first page.

Summation

This is a very young technology that needs time to develop. The presenter said as much and the limitations of it are clear at this juncture. I count 8 mistakes it made out of 87 words, which gives it an error rate of 9.2%.

The speaker mentioned that it could help you with hard to read handwriting. I think they simply aren’t there yet regarding that claim.

I’m still excited for this technology’s potential, but my plans are to let it back for a while as they perfect it.

I’m off to my next adventure!
