Peter Babb of Charles Co, MD (d. 1737)

This seemingly random set of records for one Peter Babb who died in Charles Co, MD in 1735 has a purpose. I’m still not sure what that is at this point. But he appears in a state dominated by a different genetic lineage, that of the Green Men of Maryland. Yet, he simply cannot be one of them.

There isn’t a single instance of anyone having the given name of Peter in the entire Maryland Babb tree. The name, however, is used in that of the Lions of the Sea and the first of the name is the last son of Phillip Babb of the Isles of Shoals. Additionally, there is another interesting Peter on the horizon. There isn’t yet enough information to make a formal connection at this time.

My predecessor, Jean A. Sargent, posed that he may have come up from settlements in Eastern, VA. Yet, this isn’t a possibility given the DNA evidence that we now have access to. The Eastern Virginia Babbs are aligned with the NC Babbs

In the tree at this moment, there is only a single possibility of who this Peter might be and that would be Peter Babb (b. abt. 02 Aug 1768 in Newton Abbot, Devon, England). Given the name and location, I would assume he is a member of the Lions of the Sea and not the White Stags of VA/NC. He is most certainly NOT part of the Green Men of Maryland lineage.

The only Peter in the tree that lived past birth, and predates this individual, is also from Newton Abbot (b. bef. 1563).

To be clear, there are more than a dozen counties of England that are as of yet unscoured for early records and new information may eventually come to light that will disprove this potential connection. I add it here, so that future researchers will have access to the possibility of this connection and can make more informed decisions about its accuracy.

Peter had a burst of records covering about an 11-year period between his first mention in Charles Co, MD records and his death. I’m including the originals below for your perusal. Without an apparent male heir, the surname lineage ends here.
