Hugh Webster Babb Jr – Bordentown Military Institute, NJ

On eBay we find the original belt and buckle of Hugh Webster Babb Jr (1-5-3-3-6-4-1-2-3) of the Lions of the Sea lineage. The listing has some incorrect assumptions that are easily remedied by knowing his vital statistics.

Hugh was born on 25 Oct 1919 to parents Hugh and Persis (Loring Conant) Babb Sr. Additional information found online shows the year of his matriculation is likely 1941. While this is a military school it doesn’t appear that Hugh entered the military. The belt is just 31″ so he had a slender frame.

He married Janet Motley and together they had two girls Leslie and Cynthia which survived him at the time of his death on 16 Dec 1988. For whatever reason the belt has found its way into the hands of an antiques dealer, which has listed it as post-civil war era, likely because the school was founded in 1872. However, a half century passed before he would attend the school.

I find the object intriguing, but I generally don’t collect 20th Century Babb objects. I have a general rule of it being prior to 1900. I’m assuming his daughters have also passed on recently, which is how the item made it to a dealer.

I’m posting here in case someone is interested in adding it to their collection.
