There is more to learn from this same record that I mentioned in my last post Why did Phillip (1) marry in Dartmouth? In addition to unveiling the Plumlie/Plumleigh history the record also establishes a connection to the Shapleigh family.
The Shapleigh/Babb connection in England is well documented. Additionally, the proximity of Phillip Babb (1) and Nicholas Shapleigh in New England means that they likely knew each other. The only doubt has been whether they met before or after they came to America. Additionally, how would they have met.
This Pedigree from the 1620 Visitation of Devon answers the question for us and finally establishes a formal connection between the two families.
Of note is that both families are Quakers or Quaker sympathizers. Nicholas Shapleigh himself was accused of being a Quaker several times and the family had several run ins with the authorities.
Answer #1
Nicholas Shapleigh’s aunt is Elisabeth Shapleigh.

Answer #2
Elizabeth Shapleigh married Thomas Plumley as seen in the Cover Image.
Answer #3
Thomas Plumley is the Great Uncle of Marie Plumlie.

Answer #4
Marie Plumlie married Phillip Babb (1).

What does all that mean?
Phillip Babb is the husband of the grandniece of the husband of the aunt of Nicholas Shapleigh.
It’s a mouthful, to say the least. What it means is that they were in-laws. There may be other connections that are more direct, but this is the first we have direct evidence of.
